Three Warranty Buckets (Not One Slogan)

• Manufacturer product (materials/defects) warranty — covers manufacturing defects in the module (and separately, usually, the inverter brand’s own product terms). Remedy, labor, and shipping rules sit in that PDF.
• Manufacturer performance (power) warranty — promises the panel will not fall below a stated power threshold over time. It is a module power-floor guarantee, not a promise of your home’s monthly kWh.
• Installer workmanship warranty — covers installation quality: mounting, wiring practices, and often roof penetrations/leak responsibility for a defined period. This is the document that matters when the issue is how it was installed, not how it was built in the factory.

Exact year counts, degradation schedules, and labor inclusions vary by manufacturer and by contract. We put the datasheets and warranty PDFs for the equipment on your proposal — we do not substitute a generic internet number for your system.

Questions to Ask Before You Sign

1. What are the module product and performance warranty PDFs for this model?
2. What is the inverter/microinverter product warranty, and who pays labor on a swap?
3. What does the installer’s workmanship warranty cover (roof leaks at attachments, wiring, response time)?
4. Are warranties transferable if you sell the home? (selling with solar)
5. What voids coverage (unauthorized roof work, DIY modifications, missed maintenance requirements)?
6. Who handles claims — manufacturer portal, installer, or both?

What Warranties Are Not

• Not homeowners insurance. Storm damage is an insurance conversation — insurance guide.
• Not a production guarantee for your bill unless your contract separately includes one (common on some third-party agreements; read the fine print).
• Not immortal company risk. A long manufacturer term still depends on the company (or successor) being able to honor it — bankability matters.

Ownership path still matters: cash and loan owners hold the manufacturer warranties; PPA/TPO providers often keep equipment responsibility during the term — confirm in the agreement. Options we discuss: cash, loan, PPA, or Propel (SolSource prepaid TPO; lease or Energy Services Agreement depending on the agreement).

Manufacturer warranties come from the brands on your proposal. Our installation workmanship coverage is stated in your contract and warranty documents at sale — length, roof-leak scope, and transfer rules are written there, not guessed on a webpage.

Is a longer performance warranty always better?

Compare the power threshold schedule, who pays labor, and the manufacturer’s standing — not only the headline year count.

Does shoveling snow void a panel warranty?

Improvised scraping can damage glass and create claim disputes. Follow the module manufacturer’s guidance; many arrays shed snow without homeowner tools.

What if my original installer is gone?

Manufacturer product/performance claims may still run through the brand. Workmanship claims are harder if the installing company no longer exists — another reason to keep documents and prefer stable partners.

Do batteries have separate warranties?

Yes — usually years and/or cycle or retained-capacity terms on the battery datasheet. See solar batteries in Ohio.
